Promotion of Alternate Dispute Resolution ADR in SME Chamber of Commerce and Industry

The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME), the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in a meeting discussed the promotion of 'Alternate Dispute Resolution' (ADR) in SME Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SMECC&I) sponsored jointly by all the SME stakeholders.
Isfandyar Ali Khan Project Officer ADR and Saima Zuberi Associate Operation Officer explained the salient features of the ADR and expressed their full support to the SMECCI and their commitment to facilitate the members with the ADR system.
They said the IFC which is an organization sponsored by the World Bank would extend its institutional support to the SMECC&I and has suggested that ADR which has been omitted in the SME policy and the SME act should be included in the agenda of the SMECC&I and the SME policy and the act should also be amended to include ADR for the benefit of the sector.
They said ADR is easy, convenient,cheap and is based on consent of both the parties to the dispute and the SMECC&I members should adopt it profusely to save its members from long drawn litigation.
Isfandyar Ali Khan particularly said " We look forward to working with UNISAME and SMEDA to support the proposed SME Chamber of Commerce in promoting the use of ADR/mediation among its member and to strengthen ADR/mediation Committee of proposed SME Chamber of Commerce and to develop mechanisms for dispute settlement within proposed SME Chamber of Commerce and/or referral to ADR Centres.
Feroze Ahmed Manager Legal Services SMEDA said Unisame, IFC and Smeda will work jointly to tune the SME policy and the corresponding act to make it more meaningful and beneficial to the sector.
President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said the ADR is highly recommended for SMEs and is practiced successfully in many countries of the world and IFC has trained many officials as mediators who are doing a wonderful job of resolving disputes amicably and in a short period of time on very nominal fees. He said we are including IFC nominee in our committee to make it effective.
